I can't say that I've even tried these in the shop or anywhere so I can't really offer any help on this one.
Perhaps someone out there can offer their opinions if they've tried this type of cymbal!?

I used a flat ride cymbal for a while. It was very smooth sounding but I missed the bell to 'ching' on and resented carrying a single purpose cymbal.

I use a flat ride, Mike. And I just inverted a bell on top. The flat ride doesn't build-up, so you get a clean sound, and there's a bell for that little "ching" that pgmrpmt likes. But now you do have 2 pieces instead of one.

I don't use all of it, all of the time, obviously. It's just nice to have it there when I want to do something specific. Kinda like having a turbo-charged car. When you need the power and acceleration--it's there!

That's so true, Mike. And it's what eventually made my decision to quit jamming out, and doing auditions. Then again, I have all I have now due to careers in other fields, all the while still being able to practice new material for hours every day for all those years. So I would not be as far along musically if my set was locked up in a truck in between gigs, while playing the same material every night. I would have stagnated. So I guess it's a fair trade-off. I'm now ready to retire at 51, and can also start a musical career, since I've pretty much honed my own musical style.
As for humping the stuff around, a long time ago, I designed my own road cases, and had them built by 'Roadie Cases'. Believe it or not, I can get that whole set into 4 cases! There are 2 long ones (all on wheels of course) that open in front and hold all of my toms and both bass drums. There's a big trap case that holds my snares and all the hardware. And there is one specially designed (all cases are hard-cover) cymbal case that holds all of my cymbals. So I'm ready to go. I just need to buy a 12' box truck! Actually, I bought that smaller jazz set for playing out, that I can add a rack of rototoms to for the melodics if the music calls for it.

i hear what you're saying about the career in a different field paying for the equipment and the time to practice! i have a similair situation too. if it wasn't for my job i wouldn't of been able to afford my equipment or any of my study materials! oh and most importantly i wouldn't have been able to own my own home to be able to make all the noice i want!
